Item Description: Cuthbert Ellison became heir to his family estates aged only 15. He was educated at Harrow & Cambridge. Always interested in politics, he became MP for Newcastle from 1812 until 1830 when he retired from politics. He became a Gateshead borough holder in 1809 and became a governor of the Gateshead Dispensary 1839 and president 1841. For some years, he lived at Gateshead Park (Park House) but left there in 1825 and moved to Hebburn Hall. He contributed generously to Gateshead buildings such as Trinity Chapel, St Mary’s Church, Ellison schools etc. One of his daughers, Sarah Caroline, married Sir Walter Charles James, later Lord Northbourne.Cuthbert Ellison died in London in 1860 aged 77.
