Date:  25/3/1971
Reference Number:  GL005203

Item Description:  In the 1860s and 1870s Regent Terrace (built c1852), along with Walker Terrace (c1847) and Queens Terrace were the most select in Gateshead. They were occupied by shipbrokers, gentlemen, accountants and coal owners. In the 1850s Regent Terrace faced onto gardens and the fields of the Shipcote estate. In 1862 part of the estate was sold for housing development. A condition of the sale was that houses of no less than £300 each be built fronting on to Regent Terrace Gardens, in order that the residents of the Terrace would not be affronted by the lower class housing which was to fill the remainder of the site. These houses became Queens Terrace. (Manders 1973).
