Item Description: Linking Newcastle and Gateshead, the Tyne Bridge is perhaps the most celebrated of all the Tyne’s bridges. When opened by King George V on 10th October 1928 the Tyne Bridge was the biggest single span bridge in the UK. At either end of the bridge are granite towers which house lifts although they are no longer in use. At one point the bridge carried the Great North Road from the South to Scotland and passed through the centre of both Newcastle and Gateshead.
